Because I watched, in a single afternoon, what my children actually needed, and it was not an intact marriage to a man who would pack their mother’s bags in front of them.
It was safety.
It was a home where the ground did not shift beneath them, where love was not a currency that could be withdrawn, where no one they depended on would ever again threaten the person they depended on most.
I had been protecting the wrong thing for eleven years.
I had been protecting the marriage, when my actual job, my only real job, had always been to protect the children, and the two were not the same thing, and had in fact become opposites.
The day I finally understood the difference was the day I stopped being a wife trying to hold a family together and became a mother, simply and fiercely, willing to burn any arrangement to the ground if the arrangement was harming her children.
