A Lake Norman Vacation Property and Two Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars
Walter had carried that blue knit baby blanket into this apartment in a plain brown paper bag one rainy Tuesday afternoon.
He’d sat on the edge of the mattress for two hours, cradling his grandson while the rain pattered against the window screen.
“He’s the finest thing our family ever produced,” Walter had said to me that afternoon.
I tucked the blue knit baby blanket around the baby’s legs and folded the soft corner under his feet.
He stirred in his sleep, let out a small breath, and sank back into the mattress.
I stood above the crib for a long minute, clutching my purse tight against my knees with one hand while the fingers of my left rested on the smooth wooden rail.
