Fear shouts.
Fear is loud because it is trying to convince itself.
What I felt in that moment, stepping toward the light with my daughter’s letter in my hand, was not fear at all but its opposite, a settled and complete certainty, and certainty is quiet.

And cutting straight through the sound system, and the applause died all at once, as if a cord had been pulled, and five hundred people went silent, and every head began to turn.
