A Promise at the Grave
I made a decision, in the reading of that letter, that I have kept ever since: that the shame in this story would sit where it belonged, which was not on my daughter and not on me, but entirely on the man who caused it.
For ten years, without knowing the truth, our whole town had quietly filed Chloe away as a cautionary tale, the promising girl who threw her future away, who got herself pregnant and could not even say by whom.
She had let them believe it.
She had accepted the whispers and the pity and the quiet judgment, worn them like a coat, to keep me safe.
And I decided, on the edge of that bathtub, that I was done letting the world hold my daughter’s name that way.
