A Promise at the Grave
I did not think Chloe would want me to keep hiding forever out of obedience to a fear that no longer applied.
I thought she would want her son to be safe.
And I had come to believe that the surest way to keep him safe, now, was not to keep him buried, but to make the truth so public and so documented that no one, ever again, could threaten him in the dark.
Fear had shaped every choice my daughter made in the last year of her life, and fear had shaped every choice I had made, without even knowing it, in the ten years since.
Between us, that man’s fear had governed two women and a child for a decade, reaching out of a locked office to arrange our lives long after the girl he threatened was gone.
