By nine the next morning, every employee at Harper’s law firm knew she had kissed Roman Falco. By ten, the story claimed she’d been secretly dating him for months.

By eleven, a receptionist asked whether Roman’s bodyguards would be attending the firm’s holiday party. Harper ignored all of it.

A cream-colored envelope waited on her desk. Roman’s proposed retainer was twenty-two pages long, meticulously written, and almost offensively generous.
