Connor lunged one step in her direction. Roman stood. He did not touch Connor. He did not threaten him. He merely placed himself between Connor and the two women.

The difference in size and authority was enough, and Connor stopped.

One of the agents entered the room. “Mr. Hayes, we have a warrant for your arrest relating to bank fraud, bribery, and obstruction of justice.”

The room filled with the metallic sound of handcuffs. Connor stared at Harper as the agent took his arm. “This is because I left you.”

Harper shook her head. “This is because you believed every person in your life existed to protect you from consequences.”

The agents led him toward the door. For one moment, Harper saw not the arrogant man from the gala but the frightened child beneath him — a child who had never learned that charm was not character.
