A Restructuring
Harper took his hand and led him back toward the lights. Inside, workers, attorneys, business owners, and families filled a building Connor had once planned to tear down.
The room did not go quiet when Harper entered. It erupted in applause. She stopped, overwhelmed.
Roman leaned close. “They aren’t looking because of me,” he said.
Harper saw Sarah near the stage, clapping with tears in her eyes. She saw union workers whose jobs had been saved. She saw families who would remain in their homes.
She saw young women from her legal clinic who now believed betrayal did not have to define their futures. For the first time, Harper allowed herself to accept what the applause meant.
It was not sympathy. It was respect.
