A Safe Child Makes Noise
You see a boy begin to falter.
You see him go down.
You see a small girl’s whole body become an alarm, her arms flying up, pointing, turning to the one adult present, pulling at her, pleading with everything an eight-year-old has.
And you see that adult — her mother — glance at the collapsed child and then turn, deliberately, back to her phone.
That was the image the jury would eventually see too, and it was the image that ended any argument about panic or confusion or a mother’s terrible mistake, because panic looks like something, and confusion looks like something, and what Sondra did on that footage looked like neither.
It looked like a woman waiting for an inconvenience to resolve itself.
