At Dad’s house, Ruby fell asleep almost the moment her head hit the pillow. I didn’t sleep at all.
I sat at his dining-room table with my laptop open, a cup of coffee going cold beside me, and eleven months of bank statements spread across the surface.
At first the transactions looked like chaos — cash withdrawals, transfers, casino charges, online shopping, payments to credit cards I didn’t recognize.
Then Denise Harper arrived.
