Denise raised a hand. “We are — but first we preserve everything. Messages, account records, photographs, call logs. And do not contact Travis or Patricia.”

That plan became impossible ten minutes later, when Travis sent me a video. He stood inside my house beside Patricia, who was wearing one of my mother’s pearl necklaces.
Patricia smiled straight into the camera.
