The folder held financial statements — from a family trust, I learned as I read, established generations back by Marcus’s grandfather, the man who had founded Vance Logistics out of nothing.

I had never understood, in five years of marriage, the true shape of our money.

Marcus had always spoken of it as his — the house, the investment accounts, the stake in the company.

But it was not, quite, his.

It belonged to the trust.
