I discovered, that morning, that I had also been missing someone quietly extraordinary, and had never known it, and would spend the rest of my life catching up to her.

Chapter 17 — The Letter

My mother, it turned out, had uncovered the whole of it years before her death.

In the course of auditing the Vance company, she had traced a web of illegal transfers moving between Jonathan Miller and a nest of shell companies, and she had understood exactly what she was looking at.

And rather than confront it directly — she was too careful for that, too much a professional — she had done the thing that would, twelve years later, reach across her own grave to protect her daughter.

She had placed certified copies of her audit inside a sealed vault envelope, with instructions that it be opened only in the event that an altered version of the Vance family trust ever surfaced.
