I want to be careful and honest about that, because grief plays tricks and I refuse to indulge them.

She did not intervene, or watch over me, or reach down from anywhere.

She had simply been, in life, the kind of person I am only now old enough to understand — thorough, and brave, and unwilling to let a lie stand just because confronting it was dangerous.

And that person, twelve years ago, doing her unglamorous job with rigor, had left behind a document that saved her daughter’s family long after she herself was gone.

That is not a ghost.

That is something better and more real than a ghost.
