Chapter 11 — The Purple Backpack

She stood up very carefully, holding on to the seatback in front of her the way a careful child does, and she reached down and unzipped the purple backpack with the little embroidered stars, and she took out a clear plastic pencil pouch.

Except there were no pencils in it.

Inside the clear pouch was a thick, dark brown leather wallet — a grown woman’s wallet, worn soft at the corners, plainly not a child’s.

Maya lifted it out and held it up in both hands, in front of her, where everyone nearby could see it.

The cabin went quiet.
