And so the single most fitting consequence, the one thing they had spent their lives most carefully avoiding, was to be seen.
Not punished, exactly, not in that moment, not legally.
Just seen.
Seen plainly, by a hallway full of strangers, as exactly what they were.
My mother’s face went red not with guilt but with the specific horror of exposure, of having the private truth dragged into the public light, and that horror was, I think, the truest justice available to me that night.
I did not ruin them.
