This is the life they wanted to take from her.

And they failed.

And I looked across the grass at my brother-in-law, holding one sleeping baby against his chest while my sister cradled the other in the sunshine, the two of them laughing quietly together at something only the two of them had heard, and I understood, with a deep and settled certainty that has never once left me in all the years since, that whatever my parents had tried to tear apart, our real family, the true one, the one built out of love instead of contracts, had only just begun.

I look at my sister’s children now, my niece and nephew, and I think about the family they will grow up inside, and it steadies me.
