“Then why?” I demanded, and I heard my own voice fracture on the word.

“If you didn’t want their money, if you never even touched it, then why on earth would you sign your name to something this disgusting?

Why put yourself on this piece of paper at all?”

Gabriel stared down at the tile between his knees for a long moment, gathering himself, and when he spoke again his voice had dropped so low I had to lean down toward him to catch it.

“Because,” he said, “I saw the intake forms.
