Part 21

That evening, Olivia came to the door.

Older. Wiser. Carrying the shadow of what she’d done, but no longer drowning in it.

She didn’t ask to come in.

“Happy birthday to her,” she said quietly.

“She watched Patricia’s video,” I told her.

Olivia’s eyes closed briefly. “I’m glad.”

A long pause.

“I know we’ll never be what we were,” she said softly.

“We won’t,” I agreed.

“But… thank you for not taking her from me. Thank you for giving me a chance to be her mother again.”

I held her gaze. “I gave Emma safety. You earned the rest.”

Tears gathered in her eyes but didn’t fall. She nodded, then walked away.

Not forgiven. Not reunited.

Just… allowed to exist within the boundaries she’d earned.
