Chapter 5 — Changing My Tie

A knock came at the door.

“Walter.

Open the door.” Rebecca’s voice.

Noah covered his ears with both hands.

I closed the laptop, but I did not unlock the door.

“Honey,” she said through it, sweet again, “what are you doing in there?” “Changing my tie.” “You’ve already changed it twice.” “Then I suppose this makes three.” There was a silence on the other side of that door that I felt in my teeth — the silence of a person recalculating — and then the sharp sound of her heels moving away down the hall.
