At twenty past eight that evening, an alert came from the security cameras at my house in Greenwich, and I opened the app and watched, from my sister’s couch in Brooklyn, my not-quite-wife let herself into my home.

She used the key I had given her two months earlier, when we had talked, tenderly, about living there together after the honeymoon.

She was not wearing the wedding gown anymore.
