Two days later, he drove to the cottage and knocked on the barely-hung door.

Mabel opened it, wiping her hands on a damp rag, and it took her several seconds to understand what she was looking at — a man in a tailored suit, on her broken porch, where no such man had any business being.

And then she understood, and the rag slipped out of her fingers and hit the floorboards.

“…Damian?”

“It’s me, Mabel.”
