“You are a child.
My child.
It was never, ever your job to carry the survival of this family on your shoulders.
Never.
That was mine.

Whatever you thought, you were wrong about that one thing, and I need you to know it: it was never your job.” I said it as firmly as I have ever said anything, because I understood, even in the emotion of that moment, that this was the most important thing I would ever tell my son, more important than the debt or the danger or any of it.
Because a child who has decided he is responsible for his family’s survival does not simply set that belief down when you hug him.
