Almost There
It did not happen all at once.
Old habits of over-responsibility do not dissolve in a single kitchen.
But it happened, by degrees, and I watched my son grow lighter month by month, and I knew that of all the things that came out of that terrible, wonderful day at the diner, the most important was not the cleared debt or the returned money or even the bicycle.
It was this: that my son finally, fully understood that he was allowed to be a boy, and that the carrying of our lives was not his to do alone, and never had been.
