There was one more question I had to ask, and I almost did not want to, because some part of me already sensed that the answer would take me somewhere I did not want to go.
“Where’s the money you earned today?” I asked.
And Caleb stopped.
Whatever momentum he’d had toward the stairs simply drained out of him, and his eyes dropped to the floor again.
“I put it somewhere safe,” he said, quietly.
