Almost There
I want to describe what that particular collapse felt like, because it is a specific and terrible experience that I think many parents will recognize, the moment when you realize that the comfortable story you have been telling yourself about your child is simply false, and that beneath it is another story you have not been allowed to see.
All those weeks, I had been managing my worry with the innocent explanations, the girl, the surprise, the changed mind.
Standing there listening to the shower run over the smell of mud and dish soap, I felt those explanations become suddenly, obviously absurd, felt them fall away like scenery, and behind them was nothing reassuring at all, only a dark shape I could not make out.
My son was in trouble.
