A lie.

Everything a lie.

And a boy’s desperate voice crying please don’t tell my mom, and a crash, and an urgent stranger telling me to come now.

I do not think I have ever, before or since, been as frightened as I was in the minutes after that call, because I had just been told that my son’s whole story was false and given no true story to put in its place, and a frightened mind will always fill an empty space with the worst thing it can find.

It is one of the small additional cruelties of that day that I had to carry the fear of the lie all the way across the city before I learned that the lie was, in fact, the most beautiful thing my son had ever done.
