Almost There
The treehouse Mark built was not a symbol of his father to Caleb.
It was, in some deep childish way, his father, still present, still real, still touchable.
And when a collection notice threatened to take the house, it did not threaten Caleb with homelessness.
It threatened him with a second loss of his father, the erasure of the last solid thing the man had left behind.
Of course he fought for it with everything he had.
He was not fighting for real estate.
