The truth of what happened to her did not depend on her surviving to tell it, or on anyone believing her over her powerful husband.

It existed, independently, in a recording, beyond his reach and his money and his lawyers, an incorruptible witness that could not be intimidated or bought or silenced.

That is a genuinely new thing in the world, and it is why I have poured so much of the foundation into the safety project, because I understand what it means.

It means the perfect private crime is no longer perfect.

It means the powerful can no longer be certain that harming the powerless in private will stay private.
