Resting on top of the yellow billing pads was an unfamiliar, cracked silver key ring holding five brass keys.

“Did someone leave these keys at the desk?” I asked, lifting them out by the thick metal loop.

Julie leaned over the counter, squinting at the brass rings under the fluorescent lights.

“Not since I came in at six,” Julie said, turning back to her clipboard.

“Maybe the night shift found them in the waiting room and put them there.”

“They were inside my personal drawer, Julie,” I said, holding them out so she could see the heavy rings.
