“Elise Porter was last seen at eight-thirty on Tuesday evening,” Sloan said, her voice dropping to a conversational murmur.

“She left her office in the downtown library.”

“I do not know her,” I said.

“She was Caleb’s girlfriend for six months,” Sloan said.

“We found her sedan parked three blocks from his house, unlocked, with her purse still on the passenger seat.”

A small bubble of steam rose to the surface of the water, popping with a soft hiss.

“Caleb’s truck was spotted on a traffic camera near the interstate at nine-fifteen,” Sloan continued, leaning against the counter.
