Chapter 2 — The Bear’s Overalls

“Tell me exactly what you saw,” Dr.

Ackerman said.

He crouched down to her level.

He did not talk to her the way the adults in her life had lately learned to talk to me.

Poppy hugged the bear against her school jacket.

Her hands were trembling — I could see them shaking around the bear’s arm — but her voice held.

“Grandma wasn’t giving Toby his real medicine,” she said.

“She was giving him a grown-up kind that makes you sleepy.

She’d get rid of the real one and use the other one instead.”

“She is seven,” my mother-in-law said, leaning in.

“She gets things confused.”

“I’m not confused,” Poppy said, and she did not look at her grandmother.

“I took his real medicine out of the trash.
