Chapter 8 — Showtime
Eric parked the SUV directly in front of the massive wrought-iron gates at a few minutes before nine, and cut the engine, and looked at me in the mirror.
“Showtime,” he said softly.
I stepped out of the car into the cold bright morning.
I adjusted my coat, and I tucked the heavy blue folder tightly under my arm, and I took a moment to simply look at the house — the great stone house with its gardens and its gates, the house I had bought with thirty years of my own work and had not set foot in without permission in longer than I could remember.
