I watched the recalculation move across their faces like wind across a field.

I want to say that the attention meant nothing to me, that I was above it, but that would be the same lie I had told myself for six years while holding the coats.

The truth is that it did mean something, though not what they might have supposed.

It was not vindication I felt, or triumph.

It was something plainer and sadder: the simple, belated relief of being seen at last as what I truly was, after years of being treated as what I was not.

I had not needed their admiration.
