At 3:17 a.m., I Thanked My Husband’s Mistress on Company Slack—Then a 2:41 Login Led to My Inheritance
PART 1 — Good Morning, Everyone
The fifth time my husband stayed out all night, I didn’t call him, cry, or ask where he was staying.
At 3:17 a.m., I opened the company-wide Slack channel used by more than five hundred employees at Vanguard Enterprise in Baltimore and typed a message.
“Good morning, everyone.
This is Fiona Lockwood, and I would like to thank Paige Snyder for taking such exceptional care of my husband, so effective today, Zachary no longer needs to come home.”
Then I pressed send.
For three seconds, nothing happened.
The screen remained bright in the dark bedroom.
My reflection floated faintly over the message, and I could see how still I was holding my shoulders.
Then a reaction appeared.
A reply started, disappeared, and started again.
Notifications came from people working late, people in other time zones, people whose phones were beside their beds.
Slack did not show me a reliable headcount of everybody who had read it.
It showed enough activity to make clear that the message had escaped the small, private life in which I had been trying to contain it.
My phone rang.
Zachary Lexington.
I declined the call.
He called again.
