A little girl stood in the doorway. She was small for five, with pale blond hair pulled into an uneven ponytail and serious eyes that seemed too old for her face.

She clutched the same damaged teddy bear Rebecca had seen in Matthew’s bag.

“Who is she?” the girl asked.

“This is Rebecca,” Matthew said.

“Why is she dressed like that?”

Matthew rubbed the back of his neck. “Because we got married this morning.”
