That was the relief.

Not that Roman lost, but that I no longer had to carry the truth alone, in the dark, against a chorus of denial.

It had been set down, out loud, in the light, where it belonged.

And a truth spoken aloud in a room that cannot deny it is a burden lifted from the one who carried it in silence — which is why the relief was so much larger than any triumph, and so much quieter, and so much more complete.
