Julian stood twenty feet down the hallway near the bulletin tables, flipping through a stack of legal folders while his attorney wrote notes on a yellow pad.

Clara came down the wide marble staircase holding Leo by his small hand.

Leo was clutching his worn stuffed rabbit by its left ear against his jacket.

Clara knelt on the cold tile floor right in front of him and pulled a bright yellow cardigan out of her leather shoulder bag.

“Put this on over your shirt before you go in,” she whispered, her voice carrying across the quiet hallway.

She smoothed the front of the yellow cardigan, then reached deep into her leather bag and pulled out a flat brown paper envelope sealed along the back with thick red tape.
