I looked down at my left hand resting on my daughter’s yellow blanket.

The pale mark where my wedding ring used to sit was smooth and clean in the sunlight.

My newborn daughter shifted against my chest, let out a small sigh, and rested her cheek flat against my collarbone.

Leo pushed his wooden locomotive along the rug and set his worn stuffed rabbit on the floor beside the crib legs.

“Is she sleeping now, Audrey?” he asked in a low whisper, tiptoeing across the floor to stand beside me.

“She’s fast asleep,” I whispered back.

“This room feels quiet and warm,” Leo said, resting his forehead against my arm.

“It is warm,” I said, cradling my daughter’s head gently against my shoulder.

“We have everything we need right here in this room.”

I bent down and rested my cheek against my baby’s soft forehead, feeling her warm breath on my skin as the afternoon sun settled quietly over our home.
