Leo’s little yellow cardigan was draped over the wooden bench beside the door.

I picked it up and reached into the right pocket out of habit, checking for forgotten lip balm or plastic toys before folding it.

Julian opened the wooden front door and stood behind the locked screen door.

Before I could get past him, he reached through the gap and snatched the cardigan out of my hands.

“Leave his clothes alone,” Julian said.

In the hallway behind him, Leo stood near the kitchen doorway, clutching his worn stuffed rabbit tightly against his chest with both arms.
