Behind the Family Portrait
Every answer I’d given him over those six months had been a lesson he was banking.
He had known exactly what he was doing.
He had died with a plan, and I was the plan.
I want to be precise about what it felt like to realize this, sitting in that living room, because it was not the clean triumphant feeling you might imagine.
It was grief, mostly.
It was the terrible tenderness of understanding that in the middle of dying — in the middle of pain and fear and the long humiliations of a failing body — my grandfather had been thinking of me.
