Starting six months ago, an entry appeared every Friday afternoon showing a cash withdrawal of exactly five hundred dollars.

The withdrawals repeated week after week without missing a single date, cutting our balance by thousands of dollars.

“When I asked him in August about taking five thousand dollars to secure a lease for my design studio, he said no,” I said.

“He told me my design studio had to wait until he hit his corporate goals,” I said.

Evelyn stopped sorting her tax papers and looked down at the printed figures in the folder.

“Five hundred dollars in cash every single Friday isn’t a normal grocery bill, Claire,” she said.
