Determined, Clara gathered photos, letters, and testimonies, seeking help from a young legal intern.
Despite facing the Hamiltons’ top attorney, she prepared to defend herself — not as an accused maid, but as a woman who refused to be crushed by injustice…

The Story Continues After Part 1

PART 2

The drawing Idan had given Clara stayed on her kitchen table long after his nanny came to collect him.

It showed two people holding hands under a bright yellow sun.

One was small, with unruly dark hair.

The other wore a blue apron.

In the corner he had drawn a door with a round brass handle.

Clara thought the door represented the kitchen where they had spent so many afternoons making pancakes.

Then she noticed that he had colored a narrow strip beside it green.

The Hamilton kitchen door was white.

The door to Margaret’s private sitting room was green.

She turned the page over.

Written in the uneven letters of a child learning to spell were four words: I SAW THE BOX.

For several minutes Clara sat motionless.

She wanted to call Idan immediately, but she was no longer permitted near the mansion, and the last thing she wanted was for a frightened child to become another weapon in the adults’ dispute.

Instead she photographed both sides of the drawing and placed it in the folder with her employment records.

A photograph was not proof of theft, but it was proof that someone had seen something the adults had missed.

The young legal intern was named Leah Ortiz.

She worked in a neighborhood legal clinic and had explained at their first meeting that she was not yet licensed to represent anyone in court.
