Idan turned eight near the end of spring.
Adam sent Clara a short message inviting her to a small party in the garden.
He made clear that she could decline without explanation.
Clara read the invitation three times.
She remembered the nights when she had helped Idan decorate paper lanterns, the afternoons when he had fallen asleep against her shoulder after school, and the way his face had crumpled the day she left the mansion.
Finally she replied that she would come for an hour.
