“Come get your worthless daughter and take her back,” my mother-in-law shouted my father as I lay broken at the bottom of the stairs after my husband shoved me down. “Your family will answer for it if she has even a scratch,” was the sole warning Dad offered her. They had no notion who my father really was, so they made fun of him.
“What’d you see in there?“Softly,” Dad prompted.
“I saw bookshelves, stacks of paper and a big blue leather book on the main desk,” I described.
“Was the book anything in particular?“ Asked Gabriel,
“I remembered distinctly that it had a heavy brass lock clasp on the side.
Dad and Gabriel shared a quick, meaningful look over my hospital bed.
“What is it?”I asked, sensing their sudden tension.
“During a federal investigation five years ago, a blue ledger with a brass lock clasp was mentioned in an intercepted wire communication,” Dad said carefully.
