“Come get your worthless daughter and take her back,” my mother-in-law shouted my father as I lay broken at the bottom of the stairs after my husband shoved me down. “Your family will answer for it if she has even a scratch,” was the sole warning Dad offered her. They had no notion who my father really was, so they made fun of him.
“They filed that paperwork while I was sitting in emergency room?” I said, incredulous.
“They filed it the minute the police took your mother-in-law’s statement,” Gabriel said.
The small hospital bay felt tighter, harder to breathe in all at once.
The medical staff moved briskly behind the thin curtain and the monitors beeped steadily.
‘Where is my daughter now?“I asked urgently.
“She is with your father and she is safe,” Gabriel assured me immediately.
The air in my lungs rushed out so fast my fractured ribs screamed with pain.
