The Humber As A Highway

One of the things that Conquest Man’s burial location makes clear is that his world was not bounded by the narrow horizon that a rural medieval setting might imply.

Barton-upon-Humber’s position on the Humber estuary made it a node in the North Sea network that connected England to Scandinavia, the Low Countries, and the German coast.

This network was not new in the eleventh century.

It had been operating for centuries, intensified by the Viking Age that had drawn Scandinavian peoples into sustained contact with England from the late eighth century onward.
