The Other Burials At St Peter’s: Context Within The Cemetery

Conquest Man’s burial was one of many excavated at St Peter’s Church during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The church is described in archaeological literature as having been excavated to expose foundations of both Anglo-Saxon and early Norman phases.

It is, in other words, a palimpsest of several centuries of religious and social history.

The full excavation investigated most of the church interior and a substantial section of the surrounding churchyard, yielding hundreds of skeletal individuals.

Making sense of a single burial, even an unusual one like Conquest Man’s, requires placing it within this broader population.
