“You let me wear my pink slippers to the hospital.”

I could barely speak.

“That’s what you remember?”

“Not only that.”

She rested her head briefly against my shoulder.

“But I remember thinking if Dad lets me wear slippers, maybe I’m not in trouble.”

I closed my eyes.

All those years I thought protection began when I called the hospital.
