The deputy took the bag without touching anything inside. “Where did this come from?”
The nurse swallowed. “Found with her belongings. Intake logged it when she came in. I’m sorry, I didn’t know it mattered until I saw the other piece.”
“Everything matters,” the deputy said.
Emily made a sound against the pillow. Not quite a sob. Not quite a warning.
Then my phone buzzed again. This time it wasn’t Daniel calling.
